DBQ – things you did well
In general: Good thesis statements Good evidence Good organization
4
DBQ – room for improvement
In general: Topic sentences to stay organized And concluding sentences to make sure you’re on track! Don’t quote documents Summarize in your own words Stick to the facts in the documents Linking your evidence back to the thesis statement You did a great job of saying he’s a great leader, but not a great job of explaining how him being a great leader makes him deserving of the title “great”
5
DBQ – room for improvement
Explaining your evidence (providing reasoning) is so important Don’t just jump over it – the connections you’re making in your head to draw a conclusion need to be articulate Imagine that I know nothing and you need to lay it out for me Or, imagine you’re explaining this to a six year old

DBQ – thoughts?

HOW TO FORMULATE AN ARGUMENT
Cats are better than dogs because they’re easier to care for. I can leave my cat Winnie alone when I leave town overnight and I don’t have to worry about walking her. I also can leave out extra food and I don’t have to worry about her eating too fast because she can pace herself. Also, cats clean themselves. I don’t have to take Winnie to a groomer because she’s always clean. As a result of that, her fur is always soft… What did I just do here? I just listed a TON of evidence. What’s the prompt?

Cats are better than dogs because they’re easier to care for
Cats are better than dogs because they’re easier to care for. I can leave my cat Winnie alone when I leave town overnight and I don’t have to worry about walking her. You can’t leave dogs alone for longer than 12 hours because they need to go to the bathroom outside. Unlike cats, they can’t just use the litterbox. I also can leave out extra food and I don’t have to worry about her eating too fast because she can pace herself. Dogs, when given the opportunity, will eat everything in sight, so you cannot leave extra food out for them without worrying that they will barf everywhere. Also, cats clean themselves. I don’t have to take Winnie to a groomer because she’s always clean. Dogs don’t clean themselves, and, as a result, smell terrible and need to be groomed often. Because of the ease of care of cats as a pet, and because they’re less reliant on humans for survival, cats are in fact better than dogs. There we go.
