Alarm stage : body & mind are alert; fight or flight response activated. Person may experience anxiety, headaches Resistance stage : body comes more resistant to disease and injury for a limited time Exhaustion stage: body can no longer take the stress; immune system starts to give in to diseases

1. Denial – person refuses to believe the loss occurred 2. Anger –being enraged & placing blame on oneself or others 3. Bargaining – making promises to change if lost person or thing is returned 4. Depression – prolonged sadness that keeps you from doing activities 5. Acceptance - Learning how to live with a loss

15 Dealing with a loss Get Plenty of rest and stick to routines prior to loss Share memories and thoughts about the deceased Express your feelings in a journal or to family and friends Do not place blame on others or yourself

Show support by running errands and doing favors Listen and understand their expressions/emotions Give motivation so that they get through adversity Seek additional support if the person is depressed for long period of time

18 Suicide Many people who have considered suicide considered it only for a brief period of time Most people who have attempted suicide and failed are usually grateful to be alive Suicide does not happen without warning. Victims ask for help in an indirect way. Any mention or signs of suicide should be taken seriously Drug use puts people at risk

The physical and emotional changes may make teens more emotional and impulsive Ask for help, avoid seclusion and surround yourself with positive people

20 Warning signs of suicide
Feeling hopeless Withdrawing from family and friends Neglecting basic needs Experiencing loss of energy Taking more risk Drug use Giving away personal things

21 Giving and getting help
Take all talk of suicide seriously Tell your friend that suicide is not the answer Change negative thoughts into positive thoughts Don’t keep it a secret
