1 The 411 ! Information and Expectations about Ms. Holder’s Class
Fifth Grade

2 Morning Routine Go to breakfast, go to restroom, and get water/fill water bottle before coming to class. Enter the room quietly through the building. You may enter classroom after 7:40 AM. Sign up for lunch.

3 Morning Routine Unpack and lay out/turn in homework.
Sharpen 2 pencils. Copy down homework into agenda (on Mondays) and give it to Ms. Holder to sign along with your reading log. Begin morning work while you wait for the agenda to be signed. (2 at a time) If morning work is finished, read quietly at your seat or do Accelerated Math.

4 Enrichment We are now on a WAVE schedule.
Enrichment block is 50 minutes. A Day, you will have PE, Music, and Science Lab. D Day, you will have Library/AIG and Art.

5 Snacks Try to bring a healthy snack.
Most days you will have a working snack break. Other days, we will take a short break for snack. Due to the location of our classroom, please bring a water bottle with a secure top to have in case you need water during the school day. You will not be allowed to leave the classroom and enter the building for water. Otherwise, you will have to wait for class bathroom breaks, lunch, and enrichment days to get water. WATER ONLY!

6 Lunch Procedures The class lunch manager will pass out student tags. You are responsible for returning them to the designated area after lunch when entering the classroom. Ms. Holder will call out the following order: lunch boxes, choice 1 and choice 2 (depending on amounts of each) You will line up at the front door . Appropriate behavior is expected in line and while eating. Follow instructions given by Ms. Holder. Bathroom break will follow.

7 Recess Ms. Holder will review recess rules before leaving for recess today. No tackling or body contact AT ALL. If you have not completed homework, classwork expectations were not met, have inappropriate behavior, or other consequences you will have to walk laps during recess, bring work with you, and/or walk laps or alternate recess. Bring or wear tennis shoes EVERY DAY. This is a time for fun and being with your friends. What you do during your recess and the amount of fun you have is up to you!

8 Dismissal Changes At 3:00, we will line up in the following order: After-school Care, Walkers, Van Riders, Car Riders, Bus Riders (Bus # will be called). We will ALL walk together down the hall. Follow my instructions. When I tell you to leave the line (calling out your way to go home), you leave and not a moment before! Appropriate line behavior is expected.

9 Homework Usually will take about an hour to an hour and a half to complete. Given Monday-Friday. Most common homework: Math, Reading, and Word Study. Some additional homework may be added if there is a project, research, or other work. Required to do one or more Study Island assignments in all four areas (ELA, Science and Math) per week.

10 Homework Reading: Read 30 minutes (must record reading on your log or you do not receive credit); Reading Responses due by Friday and are usually assigned every other week. Reading comprehension worksheet on Wednesdays. Reading is the only homework on most Fridays. Word Study: Mon.: first 5 vocab. words in three column note format, Tues.: second 5 vocab. words in three column note format, Wed.: spelling option, Thurs.: study. This will be explained further next week. Math: Usually a workbook or book page. Work must be shown or you do not receive credit.

11 Signatures Parents must sign your reading log and agenda each night. If a parent has not signed either or both for more than 3 days, parents will be contacted. Parents must also sign the sheet in your Weekly Folder (work folders from the week).

12 Behavior Expectations
There will be consequences if… Homework is not turned in on time. Agendas and reading logs are not signed and returned daily. Supplies and library books are not brought to class daily. Notes are not taken each day. Other times when students have not acted responsibly.

13 Behavior Expectations
We will work together to develop classroom rules. The following are consequences when you choose to break a conduct rule: There will be a conduct binder kept to record behavior. Any misbehaviors will be recorded by the student in their agendas each day and the agenda must be signed on those days in particular to prove a parent has seen a student’s behavior note. Not following instructions, disrespect, and repeated misbehaviors will result in silent lunch and walking laps during recess time. Severe disruptions are sent immediately to the office. **Student begins a clean slate the next day. Each day, points will either be added or deducted. Students who achieve a 93% or higher on their conduct grade will attend the 9 week’s conduct party. Any misbehavior in Enrichment classes is automatic silent lunch.

14 Positive Consequences
Students who do not behavior marks or responsibility penalties for the entire week will earn a reward and/or a special privilege. Students who are “caught being good” receive rewards for showing positive behaviors. One student a month is also selected as “Student of the Month” for exhibiting positive character traits. Phone calls home.

15 Programs and Technology
Silent Reading Supported Independent Reading (SIR) time, reporting back on books, etc. Accelerated Math Treat and sticker for 85% correct on tests Must scan 2 or more times a week May miss out on an activity or work at school or home if not actively following expectations of the program Study Island Must do a minimum of one assignment a week in each of the four areas (ELA, Science, and Math) Netbooks Tier 3 Model Classroom Will use in class each day Have to sign use agreement Many programs to be used for all subjects! Class Website Visit often for up to the minute information.

16 Media Center Procedures
Go to the media center to return and check out books after announcements in the morning and after lunch.

17 Classroom Library Procedures
After you have selected your book, sign the checkout card and put it in the checkout box. Return the card to the book when you have finished reading it and put the book back where you found it. All of my books must be returned by the end of the day.

18 What are some other procedures?
Sharpening pencils: Sharpen in the morning and when Ms. Holder is not teaching. No more than 3 at the pencil sharpener at a time. Scanning AccMath: No more than 1 at a time. Can scan when Ms. Holder is not teaching. Bathroom and water: Go as a class. If you need to go before then, you may only go when Ms. Holder is not teaching. Leave door cracked open to show that no one else is using it. This is a community bathroom, so treat it with respect! Water bottles with secure tops can be used responsibly in the classroom. The only reasons you can get out of your seat without permission is to sharpen your pencil, get a tissue, to scan, or to turn in work. IF YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF YOUR SEAT FOR ANY OTHER REASON, YOU MUST RAISE YOUR HAND FOR PERMISSION AND NOT CALL OUT. We have these procedures in place so that students can learn in a quiet and respectful environment.
