How do we measure development?
1) Economic Wealth Measured as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita = The total value of goods and services in a nation measured over a year 2) Human Development Index (HDI) gives a country a score between 0 and 1 and is based on life expectancy, education and income. 3) Birth rates 4) Death rate 5) Infant mortality rate 6) Acess to clean water 7) % rural population 8) Types of employment 9) Level of literacy For each of these indicators – identify the defintion and explain how it can be used to measure the development of a country

What problems do these have?
Fails to show disparity or differences in poverty WITHIN a country Core region – based on the urban area, has the majority of the services, business and people Periphery is rural = remote countryside involved in producing raw materials = poor
