Today we will see how heat and energy are related.
TODAY’S OBJECTIVE Today we will see how heat and energy are related. HS-PS3-2: Develop and use models to show energy at macroscropic scale is related to motion of particles.

Temperature Do molecular particles move faster in hot or cold objects?
This movement of particles is known as kinetic or potential energy? Kinetic Recall that potential energy is stored energy and kinetic energy is energy of movement.

Temperature The temperature of an object is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles of that object. As the temperature of an object increases, the average speed of the particles in random motion increases.

Thermal Energy What happens when you take butter out of the refrigerator and sit it out? It gets soft. Why? This is due to collisions between particles in butter and particles in air transferring energy from the faster moving particles in air to slower moving cold butter particles.

Thermal Energy Thermal energy is the total kinetic and potential energy of all particles in an object. Thermal energy of any object increases when the average kinetic energy of its particles increases.

Thermal Energy and Mass
Suppose you have a larger and smaller beaker ,each filled with water, and place them on a hot plate. Each will eventually boil, so they have the same average kinetic energy. However, since the larger beaker contains more boiling water (or total kinetic energy), it contains greater thermal energy.

Heat Thermal energy that flows from something at a higher temp. to a lower temp is known as heat. In making ice cream, heat flows from warmer liquid ingredients to cooler solid ingredients. The liquid ingredients release thermal energy to become solid ice cream.

Specific Heat The amount of heat that is needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of some material by 1 degree Celsius. Water has a high specific heat due to its strong cohesive bonds in its molecules.

Specific Heat….. Since water can absorb heat without a large change in temperature, due to its high specific heat, it is often used as a coolant in cars.
