4 The Plymouth Colony Per notes from Nath. Philbreck’s Mayflower – Pilgrims starved with communal farming until Gov. Bradford established individual family garden plots. Point: Often the best results are individually, which is why Christianity is a personal religion

5 Escaping Corporate Religion
Corporate religion: spiritual identity is in a church Personal religion: spiritual identity is personal One way of examining religion today is on a spectrum of personal responsibility verses corporate responsibility. We often acknowledge that the behavior of more conservative protestant denominations (such as the Baptist church) is more appropriate than the more “corporate” denominations, such as Catholicism or Episcopalians. This is possibly/likely because the concept of personal responsibility is more important in the protestant denominations than catholic/anglican. The more personal responsibility for salvation is stressed (saved by your faith rather than your churches, for example), the more behavior changes. We must note that Christianity is a PERSONAL religion. We are saved not by our congregations, but by our own behavior in Christ, of which is included our labor in a local congregation. The premise of the lesson is that the more we understand our salvation is not corporate, but individual, the more we realize that our works (specificially to these two lessons, evangelism) are better accomplished personally. This is not to say that the church lacks the authority for evangelism, but that the individual is better equipped and more directed to this work than the church. The church prepares the individual christian for evangelism (Eph 4), not vice versa

6 Escaping Corporate Religion
Individual Most “Christians” Largest denominations Fewest “Christians” No denominations One way of examining religion today is on a spectrum of personal responsibility verses corporate responsibility. 7 Escaping Corporate Religion
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; Philippians 2:12 One way of examining religion today is on a spectrum of personal responsibility verses corporate responsibility. 8 Escaping Corporate Religion
But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For each one shall bear his own load Galatians 6:4-5

9 Escaping Corporate Religion
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world James 1:27

10 Escaping Corporate Religion
Christianity is personal accountability “And do not think to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.” Matthew 3:9 We cannot believe that we could be saved by our membership in a local church. Some Jews believed that they were saved by being the descendants of Abraham

11 Escaping Corporate Religion
Christianity is personal accountability "The soul who sins shall die” Ezekiel 18:4 We cannot believe that we could be saved by our membership in a local church. Some Jews believed that they were saved by being the descendants of Abraham

12 Personal Work

13 Understanding the Lord’s Work
ALL Christians are “called” God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, ……..For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord's freedman. Likewise he who is called while free is Christ's slave Corinthians 1:9, 7:22 Who is supposed to do “the Lord’s Work”, as evangelism is sometimes called? Often the expression is used “called” to some type of ministry (in the context o I Cor 12:5). In fact, all Christians are a called people. And we are all called to do “the Lord’s Work”.

14 Understanding the Lord’s Work
ALL Christians are “called” Among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 1:67 Who is supposed to do “the Lord’s Work”, as evangelism is sometimes called? Often the expression is used “called” to some type of ministry (in the context o I Cor 12:5). In fact, all Christians are a called people. And we are all called to do “the Lord’s Work”.

15 Understanding the Lord’s Work
Not ALL people are called For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 1 Corinthians 1:26 Who is supposed to do “the Lord’s Work”, as evangelism is sometimes called? Often the expression is used “called” to some type of ministry (in the context o I Cor 12:5). In fact, all Christians are a called people. And we are all called to do “the Lord’s Work”.

16 Called for What? from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love Ephesians 4:16 Who is supposed to do “the Lord’s Work”, as evangelism is sometimes called? Often the expression is used “called” to some type of ministry (in the context o I Cor 12:5). In fact, all Christians are a called people. And we are all called to do “the Lord’s Work”.

17 Called for What? from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love Ephesians 4:16 Who is supposed to do “the Lord’s Work”, as evangelism is sometimes called? Often the expression is used “called” to some type of ministry (in the context o I Cor 12:5). In fact, all Christians are a called people. And we are all called to do “the Lord’s Work”.

18 Called for What? Be ready with an answer – I Peter 3 Turn a sinner from his error – James 5:20 Restore one in trespasses – Galatians 6:1 Correct those in opposition – II Tim. 2:25 Who is supposed to do “the Lord’s Work”, as evangelism is sometimes called? Often the expression is used “called” to some type of ministry (in the context o I Cor 12:5). In fact, all Christians are a called people. And we are all called to do “the Lord’s Work”.

19 You Are Called to Reach the Lost!
As Christians, we need to understand that we are all called to the Lord’s work PERSONAL Evangelism is greater than CORPORATE Evangelism

20 You Are Called to Reach the Lost!
We need to see this as our personal responsibility Evangelism is your calling

21 Here am I, Send Me! Isaiah 6 Cleansed by God Ready at His bidding
Looking at Isaiah – we ought to see ourselves like him, as one who has had our sin removed, and in response seeks to serve God
