1 Common Core Math I Unit 1, Day 1 One-Variable Statistics

2 How we use statistics Intro to stats

3 Two Main Uses of Statistics
TO DESCRIBE (Data Analysis) TO PREDICT (Statistical Inference)

4 Definitions Data: A collection of information in context.
Population: A set of individuals that we wish to describe and/or make predictions about. Sample: Part of a population. Individual: Member of a population. Variable: Characteristic recorded about each individual in a data set.

5 Activity: Types of Data Variables
In statistics, there are two types of data variables: categorical and quantitative What do YOU think makes a variable categorical or quantitative? (think of the root words) Discuss in your group and then put each post it note in the Venn Diagram area where you think it belongs (the middle is that you think it can be both!)

6 Types of Data Categorical Data: Data that records qualities or characteristics of an individual, such as gender or eye color. Quantitative Data: Data that measures a characteristic of an individual, such as height, weight, or age. In this unit, we will focus on quantitative data.

7 Let’s look at your answers.
What type is it? Categorical Quantitative Go over the Collect student data worksheet and discuss which type of variable each one is. Let’s look at your answers.
