PRIDE: 3/13/19 What would you do?

Overview We discussed the Empathy Gap and the term bystander effect a couple weeks ago. Today we apply

This workshop is based on the belief that most of us contribute to—inadvertently—bullying and passive bystander behavior in some, often subtle, ways. We don’t identify ourselves as bullies or passive bystanders. Most people don’t. The goal of this exercise is to (a) increase awareness of our own actions, (b) increase awareness of our effect on others, and (c) make a commitment to a next step towards addressing passive bystander behavior.

Video – What would you do?

Class Discussion If you step in, other people are more likely to step in, too. Most young people disapprove of bullying — they’re just waiting for someone to take the first step to stopping it. Remember, you should only step in if it’s safe to do so. Sometimes teens are more likely to convince each other to stop bullying than adults are. Potentially, you can have a big impact on the situation just by speaking out. The more people who take a stand against bullying, the safer your school or community will be for everyone.
