Get Ready to Read What obstacles do we face in our daily lives? Turn to page Discuss times when disorganization has been an obstacle for you. Are complications inevitable when you work with a group? Why? What disasters have befallen people and affected their daily lives?

Would you feel bewilderment if you were in sight of your destination and couldn’t get down the street because of traffic? Why might a person who missed a bus feel bewilderment about how to get to an appointment? How can bewilderment become an obstacle to achieving a goal? Catastrophe – a sudden, extraordinary disaster or misfortune The tsunami that followed the earthquake caused a catastrophe on the islands. Name and describe an event that is a true catastrophe.

Read and Comprehend As you read pages , think about: If you knew nothing about the game of chess, how could you use antonyms to find the meaning of the word pawns on page 460? Are the events on these pages part of the rising action or the climax? How do you know? What does Uncle Gil mean when he says that chess had robbed him of his childhood? Consider how you feel when you are trying to accomplish something and many small obstacles get in your way. How do you think David feels at this point in the story?
