1 Expression of Endothelin-1 and Constitutional Nitric Oxide Synthase Messenger RNA in Saphenous Vein Endothelial Cells Exposed to Arterial Flow Shear Stress  Zhi-Gang Zhu, MD, PhD, Hui-Hua Li, MD, Bao-Ren Zhang, MD  The Annals of Thoracic Surgery  Volume 64, Issue 5, Pages (November 1997) DOI: /S (97)00859-X Copyright © 1997 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Terms and Conditions

2 Fig 1 Expression of constitutional nitric oxide synthase (cNOS) messenger RNA (mRNA) by cultured human saphenous vein cells under different flow shear stresses. At 7 hours, compared with group III, the expression levels of cNOS mRNA (expressed as mean value) were significantly decreased in group I (p<0.001) and group IV (p<0.05) but were increased in group II (p<0.05). After 24 hours, cNOS mRNA expression had no significant changes in groups II, III, and IV but was significantly decreased in group I (p<0.05) as compared with the expression at 7 hours. (Group I, 30 dynes/cm2; group II, 6 dynes/cm2; group III, 2 dynes/cm2; group IV, 0 dynes/cm2.) (RND = relative densitometric ratio of cNOS mRNA expression against glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase mRNA expression.) 3 Fig 2 Expression of endothelin-1 (ET-1) messenger RNA (mRNA) by cultured human saphenous vein cells under different flow shear stresses. At 7 hours, compared with group III, the expression levels of ET-1 mRNA (expressed as mean value) were significantly increased in group I (p<0.01) and group IV (p<0.01) but were decreased in group II (p<0.05). After 24 hours, ET-1 mRNA expression had no significant changes in groups II, III, and IV but was significantly increased in group I (p<0.05) as compared with the expression at 7 hours. (Group I, 30 dynes/cm2; group II, 6 dynes/cm2; group III, 2 dynes/cm2; group IV, 0 dynes/cm2.) (RND = relative densitometric ratio of ET-1 mRNA expression against glyceral-dehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase mRNA expression.)
