2 What is Vitiligo? Vitiligo is a condition in which the pigment is lost from areas of the skin, causing whitish patches, often with no clear cause.

3 Scientific Description
Vitiligo is a skin disorder that affects the melanocytes, cells deep within the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin) whose function is to produce melanin.

5 Other Signs Vitiligo signs include: Patchy loss of skin color
Premature whitening or graying of the hair on your scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows or beard Loss of color in the tissues that line the inside of your mouth and nose (mucous membranes) Loss of or change in color of the inner layer of the eyeball (retina)

6 Cause Vitiligo occurs when pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) die or stop producing melanin — the pigment that gives your skin, hair and eyes color. Doctors don't know why the cells fail or die. It may be related to: A disorder in which your immune system attacks and destroys the melanocytes in the skin Family history (heredity) A trigger event, such as sunburn, stress or exposure to industrial chemicals

7 Cure There is treatment for the skin to make it appear better, but there is no cure for the disorder. Disease onset before age 3 was defined as early onset, whereas patients with vitiligo onset from ages 3 to 18 were considered to have late-onset disease. The only medicine that can treat vitiligo is steroid/ immunosuppressive drugs. Dermatologists may help with the treatment also.

8 Worst Case Scenario The worst case scenario is probably going all white like Michael Jackson.

9 Facts More than 200,000 US cases per year
Vitiligo can affect people of any age, gender, or ethnicity. Genetics are believed to play, at the very least, a minor role in the development of vitiligo.
