1.2 Jewish Questions about God’s Promise
This period (the 400 years) was filled with turmoil and suffering for the God’s people. They were under the rule of several different empires (Babylonian, Persian and Greek), and through all of this, they longed for their promised Messiah

Because some empires ruled with more cruelty than others, the expectations of what or who exactly the Messiah would be often changed with the empire For example, questions like: “Would their Messiah be a political leader”? “Would he be a military leader”? These kinds of questions consumed the Jewish people as their longing for deliverance grew, and as the time for the arrival of Jesus drew nearer
