Cellular Structure and Function
Chapter 7 Cellular Structure and Function
2
7.1 Cell Discovery and Theory
Main Idea: The invention of the microscope led to the discovery of cells.
3
Cell Discovery In 1665 an English scientist named Robert Hooke made a simple light microscope First person to see “cells” Gave them the name cells because they looked like the cells monks lived in
4
Cell Theory The cell theory is a fundamental idea of Biology
There are three parts to the cell theory All organisms are composed of one or more cells The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization of organisms All cells come from cells
5
2 Types of Microscopes Light Microscope Electron Microscope
Uses a series of lenses and visible light to magnify an image Magnifies up to 1000X Electron Microscope Uses a beam of electrons to produce an image Magnifies up to 500,000X
6
Cells Types All cells have one trait in common a plasma membrane
This is a boundary that helps control what enters and leaves the cell
7
Cell Types There are 2 basic types of cells Prokaryotic-Ex. Bacteria
Eukaryotic-Ex. Skin cells Eukaryotic cells are generally one to one hundred times larger than Prokaryotic cells Cell Types
8
Cell Types Eukaryotic cells Prokaryotic cells More complex structure
Have a nucleus Have membrane bound organelles Organelles are specialized structures in the cell Most are multi-cellular Prokaryotic cells Simple structure No nucleus No membrane bound organelles Most are unicellular
