2 Protective or harmful? Protective or harmful? Activated glia and immune cells in the retina acquire protective and degenerative phenotypes in neuronal disease and injury. The extent to which cells polarize toward one phenotype could lead to zones of protective or deleterious signaling. Alternatively, reactive cells may express both signal types, compartmentalize such signaling across different processes extending into different tissue zones, and promote repair in one area and degeneration in another.
