1 Mendel and his Laws of Inheritance

2 Gregor Mendel Austrian Monk (1822-1884)
Is considered the “Father of Genetics” His data revealed patterns of inheritance in pea plants 3 Laws of Inheritance

3 Thought Questions On the thought questions side, answer question #1.

4 Mendel’s Laws of Inheritance
Principle of Dominance – some alleles are dominant and some alleles are recessive A dominant allele completely masks the effects of a recessive allele. A dominant allele produces the same phenotype in heterozygotes and in homozygotes.

5 Thought Questions Answer questions #2, and #3 on the thought questions side.

6 Mendel’s Laws of Inheritance
Law of Segregation – In diploid organisms, chromosome pairs (and their alleles) are separated into individual gametes (sperm or egg) This is why you separate the alleles when you determine the gametes for the outside of the punnett square.

7 Mendel’s Laws of Inheritance
Law of Independent Assortment – When homologous chromosomes line up in Meiosis, they line up randomly Chromosomes from mom and dad are separated and distributed randomly into gametes

8 Thought Question Answer the final thought question now on the thought question side.
