1 Action research project to examine how parents and school can work together to improve the eating and feeding behaviour of a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Sarah Riddleston

2 Estimates in the literature suggest that up to 89% of children with ASD have feeding problems: the causes of which are unclear Schreck at al (2004)

3 Marshall et al, (2015), Curtain et al, (2015).
Extreme neophobia (fear of new foods), restricted dietary variety and food selectivity and high frequency of single food intake Marshall et al, (2015), Curtain et al, (2015).

4 Prior to any intervention
Volume: 3.5kg Variety: 3 foods

5 Shared observation of boy R feeding in two different environments

6 Home and school agreed on a uniform approach to feeding and eating

7 Post-intervention (7 weeks later)
Volume: 4.4kg Variety: 9 foods

8 Follow up (one month later)

9 Whilst the effect of the intervention on other populations cannot be determined, the study does provide some useful guidelines Work in complete collaboration to have a unified approach All evidence should be gathered collaboratively to highlight differences in feeding and eating routines Shared observation of the child feeding in their naturalist settings Set aims/targets collaboratively (home and school) which are realistic, manageable and fit into both the school and family routine Weekly contact to address concerns, provide support Continually review and revise the targets together as appropriate
