BELEMNITES:

COLEOIDEA: These include squid, cuttlefish and octopuses plus various extinct groups most importantly the belemnites. Draw a typical belemnite with soft parts (Page 94 Fig. 60 a). It is a cephalopod but with an internal rather than exoskeleton.

BELEMNITES: The shell usually has three parts:
The guard: Bullet shaped cylinder of calcite. Phragmacone: Conical thin walled structure in front of the guard. Has a slender siphuncle and tiny protoconch. Pro-ostracum: Long flat tongue pointing forwards. Appears to be a kind of fossilised squid. Mode of life similar to ammonites.
