Plato’s Physical Education:
Chapter 9: Objectives Plato’s Physical Education: A guide to teaching physical education at all levels and in all environments.
2
Sample objective The students will be able to throw a baseball with proper form and hit a 5 x 5 target from 30 feet 4 out of 5 times.
3
Types of objectives Psychomotor (motor) Cognitive Affective (social)
A physical skill to be accomplished Cognitive A knowledge based skill Affective (social) A interpersonal skill Fitness Improves fitness
4
Portions of an Objective
Who What Restrictions How much / how many Standard addressed
5
Who Only three options The Students Will Be Able To SWBAT
6
What Motor skill Cognitive Social Action verb (Table 9.1)
Runs, kicks, dribbles, etc Cognitive Knowledge verb (Table 9.2) Knows, recalls, remembers, etc Social Demonstrates, uses, shows, etc.
7
Restrictions These are the limiters of the skills
Make the skill more specific Should be detailed Different for the different types of objectives Always has AT LEAST 2 3 if using correct form as a restriction
8
Motor restrictions Target (size) – 5x5 target
Distance – from 25 feet away Movement pattern – while running Speed – at a moderate pace Obstacles – over a defender Hand used – with your right hand Where performed From tee? From fairway? From rough? One requirement – always add “with proper form” as 3rd restriction Closed loop (discussed later) should always have a time or distance Never both
9
Cognitive restrictions
Answer two questions #1 They will know what? The rules The history Positions Strategy #2 How can we prove they know this Use the term “by” and then state answer By taking a test By writing a paper
10
Social Restrictions Answer two questions #1 Will demonstrate what
List the skill Teamwork Compassion #2 How can we prove they know this Use the term “by” and then state answer Helping an opponent up after falling Communicating with their teammates Calling a foul on themselves when appropriate
11
How much / how many Depends on the type of skill Social Cognitive
Always 100% Never give them any amount that it is not appropriate “shows respect by not punching the teacher 95% of the time.” Also says, “its ok to punch the teacher 5% of the time.” Cognitive Always 75-80% or higher Not appropriate to expect more than 80% out of everyone Anything lower than 75% is not asking enough
12
How much / how many Motor skills Open loop Closed loop
Start ad stop at different points Throwing a baseball Always 4 out of 5 times Closed loop Start and stop at the same place Dribbling a basketball Always 2 out of 3 times
13
Standards Any objective should include either a state or a national standard This should be listed at the end of the objective, in parenthesis.
14
Examples Must be complete
Missing information will make objectives not valid Phrases such as “proper form” and “under control” allow for this type of detail. Do not fall into the trap of always using “by taking a test” for your cognitive. How would you have liked to have to take a test every day in your Physical Education class?
