Robert Indiana was born in New Castle Indiana. He changed his name from Robert Clark to Robert Indiana so everyone would know where he came from.

Robert used symbols and numbers in his art because he moved a lot as a child and he remembers seeing street symbols, words, and numbers out the car window. He loved numbers the most because they are all around us. Our phone numbers, addresses, birthdays, money, and many more. He paints what he knows best.
