You can classify reactions into different types. There are many different types of chemical reactions there are Synthesis, decomposition, single and double replacement and also a combustion reaction.
3
A single replacement reaction is when one element takes the place of another element in a compound. The general form is A + BC B + AC Usually when these reactions happen it is a solid being added to a solution. An example is this copper wire in a silver nitrate solution the solution turns blue and the copper wire has silver crystals on it.
4
A double replacement reaction is when two different compounds exchange positive ions and form two new compounds. This is the general form of a double replacement reaction. In order for a double replacement reaction to occur both elements must be soluble in water They usually take place when two solutions are mixed together
5
Reduction is when an element gains electrons during a chemical reaction. Reduction occurs when the oxidation number of an atom decreases.
6
Combustion Reaction A combustion reaction is when a substance reacts with oxygen. The reaction takes place when a fuel and oxidant react which produces heat or heat and light. The most recognizable form of a combustion is a flame
7
Oxidation is any process when an element loses electrons during a chemical reaction. An example of this would be calcium reacting with oxygen.
8
A synthesis reaction is a reaction when two or more substances react to form a single substance. For the reaction to work there has to be a cation and an anion An example of this would be sodium metal reacting with chlorine to form sodium chloride. 2Na(s) + Cl 2 (g) 2NaCl(cr)
9
A decomposition reaction is a reaction when a compound breaks down into two simpler substances. This reaction often requires exposure to a catalyst such as heat or a solvent. An example would be water being broken down into hydrogen and oxygen.
10
1. Name two types of reactions. 2. What happens during oxidation. 3. What does a synthesis reaction require for it to react. 4. Give an example of a decomposition reaction 5. What does a combustion reaction produce Next five are true or false 1. A decomposition reaction is when a compound breaks down into simpler substances 2. A combustion reaction is when it reacts with magnesium 3. Reduction is when an element loses electrons 4. Double replacement reaction is when compounds exchange positive ions 5. A synthesis reaction forms a single substance
11
