1 CHEM 433 – 9/20/11 II. Gases B. “Real” Gases (1.3)
- “Ideal” vs. “Real”: Macro & Micro - The compression factor - The virial equation —> —> Real Gas Isotherms READ: Chapter #1 –we finish it tomorrow … !!! HW: Due Th at 4 – or F ? Exam #1 coming next week (W?)

2 Ideal Gas Law: PV=nRT An “Equation of State”… Relates 4 variables that describe the state of a gas - only 3 of which are truly independent. Or: PVm=RT Where Vm= V/n (molar V), 3 variables - only 2 independent…

3

4 Talk about these two things:
1) What is the microscopic implication of the points on the curves (aside from (0,1)) where Z=1? • Sketch in a guess of the curve for C2H3F. (how do its forces differ?)

5 Real gas “isotherms” ~Like ideal at high T - then “not so much …” P(V) = ??? T constant

6 Isotherms: IDEAL (P~1/V) REAL (P~1/V+1/V2+1/V3…)
