Jigsaw Yesterday you completed 3 of the Beowulf close reading guides. Today you will share with your group so you will have all 12 chapters. If finished early, please read the chapters for tomorrows quiz.

Group Discussion Questions
Discuss these questions and as a group create an answer to each of them. Be prepared to share your answers. What reasons does Beowulf identify for traveling to the Danes' land to fight someone else's enemy? Are his reasons selfish or selfless? According to the poet, Grendel is descended from the lineage of Cain. In the Bible, Cain murders his righteous brother, Abel. Why does the poet choose Cain as the forefather of Grendel? What about Grendel's actions, motivations, and relationships make him similar to Cain? The plot of Beowulf is full of characters talking about the good or bad deeds of people in the past. How does this relate to Beowulf's efforts to gain a good reputation? Why did Beowulf have to fight Grendel unarmed?

They show the oral tradition. They are moral stories meant to direct the listeners to make good choices.
