The Unit Big Idea The Engineering Design process is a systematic, iterative problem solving method which produces solutions to meet human wants and desires. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™
3
The Lesson Big Idea Engineers and designers must incorporate design principles when generating solutions to problems. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™

Design To solve problems engineers, architects, designers
Use scientific knowledge Use mathematical applications Design requires taking constraints into account Physical Biological Economic Political Social Ethical Aesthetic © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™
5
Design Designer personal characteristics Creativity Resourcefulness
Ability to visualize Ability to think abstractly Designers also have to take human values and limitations into account. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™

Design Principles Established design principles are used to create designs across all technologies and to evaluate designs Flexibility: the material properties or flexibility related to the purpose of an object Balance: the position of elements in relation to each other Function: the purpose of an object Proportion: the size of different elements in relation to each other © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™

Universal Design All new environments and products
Should be usable by everyone regardless of Age Ability Circumstance © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™

Design Considerations
Design is the result of a formal, sequential process. Design problems seldom arise in a clearly defined form. Design is driven by profit motive and market. Design requirements sometimes compete with each other. Design is the result of goal-oriented research. Designs must be continually checked, refined, and improved. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™

Reflection Can you think of a real world example of one of the considerations from the previous slide? For example: Consideration: Design requirements sometimes compete with each other. Example: The design of a green building may require the installation of solar panels to generate electricity off the grid, however there is limited space for the solar panels. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEMCenter for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology ©International Technology Education Association Center to Advance the Teaching of Technology & Science Engineering byDesign™
