2 Renaissance: Rebirth of classical ideas
Renaissance: Rebirth of classical ideas. The renaissance was a time of creativity and change in many areas – political, social, economic & cultural. Emphasis placed on the achievements of individual human beings The Sistine Chapel

3 Humanism: An intellectual movement at the heart of the Italian Renaissance that focused on worldly subjects rather than on religious issues. Humanists were usually Christians who believed that the individual in the here and now had an important role to play. Education was important and so was emphasis made on individual achievement.

4 Reformation: Martin Luther was a Catholic priest in Germany who protested corruption in the Church and proposed reform. Printing press helped spread secular ideas. Many viewed the Pope a foreign ruler and challenged his authority. Merchants resented having to pay taxes to the Church. Church leaders began to marry, have children, drink and were poorly educated

These ideas, which surfaced in art, also weakened the hold of the Roman Catholic Church on society and led people to question authority, part of what caused the Protestant Reformation.
