2 The Roaring Twenties The 1920s was seen at first like a huge party, people were having fun, buying stocks, making money, seeing movies, and driving new cars. Prohibition banned the use of alcohol by the 18th amendment, which lead to organized crime. Sports like baseball became America’s pastime, and movies became popular as over 100 million people went every year.

3 Women in the 1920s Women got the right to vote in 1920 as they also gained more independence. This led to the emergence of the flapper girl, who smoked, drank, stayed out late, and looked for romance. Victorian Era being taken out and replaced by the younger generation Birth control Women working More women attending school Participation in sports

4 Buying, buying, buying People who could afford material items/luxury items, bought them. New cars Fancy Clothes Investing in Stocks Radios T.Vs Mass production and consumption influenced played a major role. Commercials influenced buyers to buy products using the radio and T.V. If you were living during this time, would you buy the same items? Why?

5 How did life look at this point in America?

6 Stock Market Crashes So many people played the stock market, that when it failed it effected the whole country. Stocks were through the roof to start as businesses flourished with mass production. It didn’t last and soon people’s stocks crashed along with the initial business which caused people to become broke. Stock Market crashes in 1929, leaving the entire country in a state of panic. 13 Million + people lose their job or 1 out of every 4 Americans Those who could find a job got paid very little for it

8 Franklin D. Roosevelt November 1932, FDR is elected as President, beating Hoover 22.8 million to million votes. Announced a four day bank holiday. This helped Congress reform the banks in order to reopen them in a somewhat working order. Projected his plan called the New Deal In his first 100 days in office Roosevelt accomplished plans to help Agricultural production Promote jobs Stimulate recovery

9 The New Deal The New Deal was the collection of plans, experimental project, and organizations created during the Great Depression in order to help restore the American economy. Permanently changed the relationship between the government and the people. Social Security National Industrial Recovery Act Works Progress Administration The New Deal faced problems with how much the government was being involved in people’s lives, even during such a crisis.

10 How did FDR’s New Deal help the people in the United States get back on their feet?
How was FDR seen as a president for the American people? Would you be for or against the New Deal and the governments new role in American society? Why?

11 World War 2 and the end of the Great Depression
FDR is elected into a third term as president. Asks Congress to implement the Lend-Lease Act in order to aid Britain during its conflict with Germany Isolation plays a big role in America to stay out of this new war. It is short lived after the Peal Harbor attack by Japan in 1941. By entering the war, people are able to find jobs to help support the war effort. Ironically, war helped the American economy.
