2 Contradictory Proverbs
Proverbs are ancient words of wisdom handed down through the ages. Often, they provide sound advice that you’d be wise to follow. However, some English proverbs seem to contradict other well-known proverbs. In this Video English Lesson I’ll take a look at 10 of them. Look before you leap. ● If you don’t think carefully about an opportunity, you will regret it later. He who hesitates is lost. ● If you spend too much time thinking about an opportunity, you will lose it altogether. You’re never too old to learn. ● Old people can learn new things and are more open to new ideas than you might think. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. ● Old people can’t learn new things because they are too set in their ways. Many hands make light work. ● The more people there are, the quicker and easier it is to accomplish something. Too many cooks spoil the broth. ● The more people there are, the more likely it is that what you are working on will be a mess. Don’t judge a book by its cover. ● You shouldn’t decide on the worth of something or somebody from appearances alone. The clothes make the man. ● People will decide on the worth of you by the clothes that you wear and how you look. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. ● You have to keep trying to get what you want no matter how long it takes. Don’t bang your head against a brick wall. ● You shouldn’t keep trying to achieve something that is completely hopeless. These contradictions remind me of another well-known proverb. The early bird catches the worm. ● Those who do things before anyone else will always have the advantage. If you look at it from the worm’s point of view, however, the proverb serves as a warning. With no desire to be caught by the early bird, this worm always avoids getting up early. I hope you enjoyed this Video English Lesson. You’ll find an Interactivity to help you learn at Linguaspectrum.com. There are hundreds of other lessons there, too. You can also sign up as a Britlisher at Britlish.com. I’ll be back soon with more of the most interesting English on YouTube. Goodbye for now.
