2 Fig. 1 Infarct size as a percentage of the risk zone is presented for isolated rabbit hearts exposed to 30min regional ischemia + 120min reperfusion. Open symbols represent individual experiments while the solid symbols show group means±S.E.M. Ethanol at three different concentrations (10, 20 and 50mM) was presented to the hearts for 5min followed by 10min of washout. Note infarct size was reduced by all three concentrations. In the two “long” groups the ethanol (10 and 50mM) was present from 15min prior to ischemia until reperfusion. Note protection was lost when ethanol was present during ischemia. *P<0.05 vs. control.
