2 Cud “Jews can eat meat from any animal that chews its cud and has a split hoof such as cows, goats, and sheep…” Cud-partly digested food brought up from the first stomach to the mouth for further chewing.

3 fasting “Yom Kippur is the most important Jewish holiday. Jews traditionally observe this holiday with a 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer..” Fasting-a period of time when one does not eat, usually for religious reasons.

4 Desecrated “More than 2,000 years ago, the Greeks and the Syrians ruled over the Jewish Holy Land. They forbade the Jews to worship and desecrated the Jewish Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Desecrate-to treat a holy place with disrespect.

5 rededicated “When the Jews regained control, they purified and rededicated the temple.” Rededicate-to dedicate again.

6 correspond “The Hebrew calendar is connected to the movement of the earth, the moon, and the sun, so it does not correspond exactly with our calendar. That’s why Hanukkah begins on a different date each year.” Correspond-goes along with; aligns.
