The Jews And Mercy Last week it was a Priest and a Levite who failed to show mercy to the wounded man (Lk. 10:30-37) There is also the unconscionable attitude to the Pharisees (Lk. 18:9-14) Jesus had to call them twice on their failure to extend mercy

Matthew 9:10-13 Grousing that Jesus ate with publicans and sinners (10-11) They would not do so themselves Yet, this was the mission of Jesus (12-13b; Lk. 19:10) They needed to learn, and show, mercy (13a)
5
Matthew 12:1-8 The Pharisees accused the disciples of wrong doing (1-2) Jesus denies this and calls the disciples “guiltless” (7b) Same problem as before: lack of mercy (7a)

Both hearken to Hosea 6:6 Israel had been called to repentance (Hosea 6:1-3) Yet, their faithfulness was shallow (Hosea 6:4) Judgment will not be forestalled (Hosea 6:5) Sacrifice does not compensate for a lack of other duties. Mercy and sacrifice are both required by God (Hosea 6:6)

The Unmerciful Servant Matthew 18:21-35
