26
Really, there is a decimal point at the end of every whole number and there are zeros in every place value column before and after a number. . 1 1 1 100,000s 10,000s 1,000s 100s 10s 1s s s s 10 100 1000 3 . is the same as 3, because all the zeros tell you is that you don’t have any hundred thousands, ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, tenths, hundredths or thousandths. But just writing the number 3 also tells you this.
27
3 . 4 . You can ignore zeros at the end of a decimal number.
1 1 1 100,000s 10,000s 1,000s 100s 10s 1s s s s 10 100 1000 3 . 4 3.40 = 3 wholes + 4 tenths + 0 hundredths 3.4 = 3 wholes + 4 tenths 3.40 and 3.4 are the same, because all the 0 tells you is that you don’t have any hundredths, so although writing 3.40 isn’t wrong, we usually just write 3.4.
28
You can’t ignore zeros in the middle of a number because they are place holders.
1 1 1 100,000s 10,000s 1,000s 100s 10s 1s s s s 10 100 1000 3 . 4 3.04 = 3 wholes + 0 tenths + 4 hundredths 3.4 = 3 wholes + 4 tenths We need the 0 to show that the 4 represents hundredths, not tenths, just as in the number 304, we need the 0 in the tens to show that the 3 represents hundreds.
29
. 3 4 . The units column can’t be empty.
1 1 1 100,000s 10,000s 1,000s 100s 10s 1s s s s 10 100 1000 . 3 4 You need to write 0. before 34 to make it clear that you have 3 tenths and 4 hundredths, not 3 tens and 4 units. Make sure your decimal point looks like a full stop, not like a comma.
