Artisanal mining and agriculture: analyzing the linkages Research project Background Research questions What circumstances and risks hinder the viability of agriculture in mining areas and what should be done to overcome them? to what extent artisanal mining has particular linkages with agriculture, both forward and backward? Can agriculture be a potential alternative income activity should (artisanal) mining no longer possible? Under what circumstances/ conditions? Methods Qualitative data: Interviews, Focus group and mapping with the stakeholders in agriculture and mining Quantitative data: surveys with farmers and miners; descriptive statistics, regression analysis, propensity score matching NYABIBWE Located in the territory of Kalehe (South-Kivu), Nyabibwe is a city where agriculture and mining are dominant activities The soil is fertile and agriculture is flourishing Research progress A first pilote study will be conducted in December Implications of the project Contribution to the understanding of the relationship between artisanal mining and the agricultural sector Formulation of policy recommendations for agriculture to be a viable alternative of artisanal mining Francine IRAGI MUKOTANYI Ph.D candidate:IOB/Univeristy of Antwerp Researcher: CEGEMI/Université Catholique de Bukavu
