The Romantic Movement In the late 18th century the enlightenment paved the way for a new major movement in art and ideals – romanticism Reflected deep interest in both nature and in the thoughts and feelings of the individual. They turned from reason to emotion, from society to nature.

The Ideas of Romanticism
Emphasized inner feelings, emotions, and imagination Focused on the mysterious and supernatural Loved beauty of untamed nature Idealized the past as a better time Glorified heroes and heroic actions Cherished folk traditions, music, and stories Valued the common people and individual Promoted radical change and democracy

Romanticism in Lit. At the time poetry was considered the highest form of expression. Gothic horror stories became widely popular. (Frankenstein, Dracula ) Victor Hugo – Les Miserables, and Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Shift to Realism in the Arts
Due to the growth of the Industrial Revolution, art will be reshaped. It caused the dreams of many romantics to wither. Realism will begin to show in art and literature.

Goal of realism was to show life as it was, not as it should be.
Reflected the political importance of the working class. Artists will detail the lives of actual people in their work.

Impressionists React Against Realism
These people will react against the form of art that is realism. Instead of showing what life really is, they wanted to show a snapshot in time. It is for this it became to be known as impressionism Used shimmering colors to capture moments at a glance.

Impressionists will show a more positive view of urban society.
Instead of showing abused workers, they would show happy workshop workers enjoying themselves at a dance. Will glorify the delights of life of the rising middle class.
