CODE
2
Definition The set of rules and standards adhered to by a society, class, or individual Human experience is “coded” We have systems of signs that establish meanings and relationships. Ex: Our clothes are coded—we can tell social class, personal tastes, etc. OUR WHOLE ENVIRONMENT AND ALL OUR ACTIONS ARE CODED: EVERYTHING WE DO THAT HAS MEANING ONLY HAS MEANING BECAUSE IT CONFORMS TO CODES.

STOP! GO! What Is Your Code? Pass out anticipation guide
Discussion Questions: What did you notice about your answers? Did answering quickly change the way you answered? How would having a more concrete context for the questions made the test? Easier? More difficult? Would it have changed anything? The point here is not the context, but the underlying principle. We might behave differently in different contexts, but it is due to our codes. Which codes win out? Who has taken psychology?—have you talked about Kohlberg? Kohlberg’s moral dilemmas. This might be more of an instinctual code, since you didn’t have time to think about it, But it is FASCINATING to see how we respond under pressure and how we look at the world in

-Why is there a dress code?
-Who determines the standard? -Do people follow the code? -Why do people choose to wear what they do? What overt and underlying codes are there in the way people choose to dress themselves? -Why do people choose to break the dress code? -Does having an enforced code (dress code) still leave room for choice codes (individual expression)?
