1 Progress Report Group 2 Yiwei Liu, Jenny MacPherson, Kenneth Fung, Graeme Larsen, Jono Aske

2 Review Proposal: Device designed to open medication vials and potentially other kinds of bottles Try and remove the torsion required by the user and only require a push Original idea was based on the concept of a retractable pen

3 Progress Update Contacts: Have met with Dr. Carl Adams (Physics) and Steve Macdonald (Machinist) Design: Our conversations have developed our options for potential designs Mr. MacDonald introduced us to triple start thread Looking into other products that we could emulate (Spin-top toy, mojito muddler)

4 Progress Update Research: We have begun force testing on various types of pill bottles Dr. Carl Adams set us up with tools from his physics lab This will help us to figure out which design will be most effective Going Forward: Continue our research and look into torsional forces Figure out which of our designs will be most effective Come up with initial prototype and meet with Steve Macdonald

5 Experiments

6 Unknowns 3 unknowns: Vertical force required Rotational Force Required
Degree of rotation necessary

7 Vertical Force Test Bar attached to top of a post via pivot, lies flat across top of pill bottle Load applied to end without pivot until necessary force is reached Force on cap calculated using sum of moments about pivot Force vs. Displacement mapping for cap of pill bottle

8

9 Rotational Force Test String wrapped around outside of cap
Enough vertical force is applied to disengage locking system Pull horizontally on string using Newton meter Force required to break static friction is reading on Newton meter when the cap begins to turn

10 Angle of Rotation Attach pin to top of cap, sticking out horizontally
Place protractor under bottle Record initial position (º) of pin when cap is locked Turn cap until open and record new position Difference in angle (º) is the angle of rotation required

11 Design Challenges Materials Left-handed thread vs. push-pen design
Machinist does not have necessary tools 3D printer not large enough Left-handed thread vs. push-pen design Angle of rotation Ease of use Ease of build

22 Next Steps After we collect the data from our experiment, we will see if our design meets the requirements. Meet with the rest of our contacts. Finalize our design right on schedule and create a final AutoCAD including the dimensions of our prototype. Schedule another meeting with Steven MacDonald to discuss our finalized design. Gather materials and start assembling our prototype.

23 Thank you! Questions?
