In the center of the North American rail system 6,000 track miles 6,500 employees Canadian National CANADIAN PACIFIC BNSF CSX UNION PACIFIC Ferromex Norfolk Southern KCS centrally located, surrounded by the merger-railroads. KCS has direct interchange points with all Class I’s except CP. For most of the 20th century, KCSR was comprised of the corridor from Kansas City to its rail hub at Shreveport, LA, with corridors going west to the Dallas area and south to Baton Rouge and New Orleans. In 1993, acquired the MidSouth Railroad which provided a direct corridor from Shreveport to Meridian, MS. In 1996, acquired a 49% share in the primary Mexican rail franchise, TFM. In 2005, acquired full ownership of the Mexican franchise and renamed it Kansas City Southern de Mexico. In the mid-1990’s, KCS also became a 50% owner of the Panama Canal Railway, a 47-mile railroad linking the port cities of Balboa and Colon. The PCRC runs parallel to the Panama Canal. KCS has approximately 6,500 employees and operates over approximately 6,000 track miles FERROSUR
