1 Freshwater Conservation
#24 Management 120

2 Why Freshwater? Anything not salt water
Residential drinking water is all freshwater Any freshwater consumed for business or residential purposes takes away from possible consumption

3 So What’s the Problem? Each day, New Mexico and Arizona use 300 million gallons more than they can renew1 At current rates of consumption, the Arkansas underground river will be dry in 5 years4 Non-drinking usage can range from 50-80% of freshwater usage per state3 *Chart from source 1

4 What’s Going to Happen? The San Francisco Bay will face a crisis in the next 50 years5 Seattle and Chicago will be facing freshwater shortages in the next 20 years5 The entire southern USA will be in a perpetual state of drought by 20506

5 What Should Be Done? Companies like Australia’s “Water Corporation” offer ways to treat wastewater and replace it into lakes2 Companies requiring High-Efficiency toilets can save up to 2 gallons/flush7 More companies should use services of corporations similar to Water Corp. to help learn about saving freshwater resources However, not many of these companies yet exist in the US, and need to be created

6 What Can We Do to Help? Although largely a corporate problem, residential citizens can help too Lawn watering can consume 50-80% of state’s freshwater usage3 Combining showering and brushing teeth can waste 5 gallons of water per morning

7 Does Anybody Actually Care?
Cal Coast Plumbing, a company with 10 employee, saved 1 million gallons of water in a 2 year period7 Power Plastics, a South African based company, has perfected many products to help companies save freshwater supplies, including Dam liners and VapourGuard, designed to keep freshwater from evaporating8
