Presentation on theme: "Water & Carbon Cycle Changes Over Time"— Presentation transcript:

1 Water & Carbon Cycle Changes Over Time
Short term changes to the cycles and the significance of these changes, including diurnal and seasonal changes of climate, temperature, sunlight and foliage.

2 Short term changes in water and carbon cycles
Objectives To be able to explain how diurnal and seasonal changes affect the carbon and water cycle. To be able to explain how changes to the global carbon and water cycle are monitored.

3 Short term changes in water and carbon cycles
How will the water cycle change from the night to the day (diurnal). Why? How will the carbon cycle vary? Why? Diurnal Change Answer the two questions above. Discuss how the water and carbon cycle will vary seasonally.

4 Short term changes in water and carbon cycles
Watch this incredible clip – how and why does the pattern of carbon emissions change over a year?

5 Short term changes in water and carbon cycles
Seasonal Changes 3) How does the water cycle vary seasonally and why? 4) How does the carbon cycle vary seasonally and why? How do we know about these changes?

6 How changes to the global carbon and water cycle are monitored?

7 How changes to the global carbon and water cycle are monitored?
What data does Nasa gather about our oceans? What does this data tell us?

8 How changes to the global carbon and water cycle are monitored?
The next slide gives you easy access to the links

9 How changes to the global carbon and water cycle are monitored?
Arctic sea ice Ice caps/glaciers Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) Water vapour Deforestation Atmospheric CO2 Primary production in oceans

10 How changes to the global carbon and water cycle are monitored?
Homework Syllabus objective To be able to explain how changes to the global carbon and water cycle are monitored. What is remote sensing? Use this website to help you. What is GIS? Use this website to help you. How have both of these methods helped to monitor the changes to the water and carbon cycles? Using table 4.13, look at each of the websites and describe and explain clearly how each satellite (yes, you need to know the names) monitors the changes in the water and carbon cycle. This could be a classic regurgitation question!

11 Long-term changes in water and carbon cycles
Read pages 5) How does the water and carbon cycle alter in the long-term?

12 Water & Carbon Cycle Changes Over Time

13 Long term changes in water and carbon cycles
Objectives To be able to explain long term (millions of years) changes in the water and carbon cycles, including changes to stores and flows.

14 How has the earth’s temperature change over the past 400,000 years?
What do you notice? How would this impact on the water cycle? Think about: precipitation, evapotranspiration and storage.

15 Long term changes in the water cycle

16 Long term changes the carbon cycle
What impact would glacial periods have on the carbon in the atmosphere?

17 Long term changes the carbon cycle
What do you notice? What could be the reasons for this?

18 Long-term changes in the water and carbon cycles
1) How has the global temperature of the earth fluctuated in the past 400,000 years? Include figures and years. 2) What impact have these changes had on the water cycle? Include stores and flows. 3a) What is the relationship with the change in temperature and the CO2 changes in the atmosphere? Include figures and years. b) What are the reasons for this relationship? c) What other changes occur in the stores and flows?

19 Plenary: It review question time!
