Kevin Tao Period 5 Key period 8
The Vietnam war

What happens after world war 2?
As postwar tensions dissolved the wartime alliance between Western democracies and the Soviet Union, the United States developed a foreign policy based on collective security, international aid, and economic institutions that bolstered non- Communist nations.

Fear of communism Concerned by expansionist Communist ideology and Soviet repression, the United States sought to contain communism through a variety of measures, including major military engagements in Korea and Vietnam.

Handling Vietnam Vietnam was split into two sides, the north and the west. The north was to be repaired by the soviets and the west would repair the south and they would be rejoined to have them vote for their form of government. As communism gained influence in the north, the united states was hard pressed to intervene.

Ho Chi Minh Was the main communist leader in northern Vietnam, and he was quickly gaining popularity even in south Vietnam, as the united states attempt at instating a democratic leader failed, military action had to be taken.

The war in vain The war was widely unpopular as many Americans believed that there was no reason for the united states to be there, while believers of the domino effect supported it. Many also despised it as there was a manual draft, sending many young men to early graves.

War atrocities The war, was not considered an official war, and was considered a conflict, as a result many chemical weapons were used such as agent orange as well as weapons that were deemed against the rules of war such as napalm and white phosphorus. They also saw mistreatment of POWs both by us troops as well as the south Vietnamese troops.

End of the war It took 20 years for the war to end and it started will the puling out of united states troops, and them being replaced by south Vietnamese troops economically supported by the united states. The public outcry and increasing hate against the us government also prompted for the receding of soldiers in Vietnam.
