THE GROTON HIGH SCHOOL STAGE CREW
Thanks for your interest in becoming a member of the stage crew! Without people like you, no one would be able to hear or see the performers, and let’s face it: performing in front of a real nice set is much more interesting than just watching a bunch of actors prance around with a curtain in the background. There are many aspects to crew that you will have an opportunity to learn about. Lighting, sound, set construction, set design, and backstage are just a few. We need people to run the house, as well. This includes ushers, head ushers, house managers, etc. So whatever your interest, we’ve got something for you! If you are interested in becoming a member of the crew (which I assume you are…since you are still reading this…), you need to get trained up. There are various ways to seriously injure yourself on a stage, and we want to keep the number of E.R. trips to a minimum. Plus, blood is real hard to clean off of a wood stage, so be considerate and keep it in your body. We will be having training sessions after school starting the week after exams. There will be either one or two per week, and each will focus on a separate aspect of crew, be it lighting, backstage, sound, construction, safety, whimsy, etc. There will be a written test at the end of the sessions, as well as a lab practical. Only after you have completed all the training sessions will you be allowed to be on the crew. This is to ensure your safety, and the safety of those around you. Plus, there’s a lot of cool stuff I want to tell you. Really. It’ll be fun. Before you decide, however, remember that being on the crew is a commitment. You will be expected to be available after school for rehearsals, and your attendance is important. Especially when we get close to show time, crew will be a demanding part of your life. So please make sure that you can balance this commitment with all of your schoolwork. If your grades are suffering as a result of crew, action will be taken which may include your removal from the crew. You are a student first, and a crew member after that. Rehearsals will start in February, and we will be working most days after school. A full rehearsal schedule is forthcoming, so please listen to the announcements for updates. Please see me if you have any questions, and thanks so much for your interest!
