Developing a Growth Mindset @ St Michael’s Catholic High School
“I’ve not failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work” (Thomas Edison) MYTHS about Ability, Success, Praise & Confidence Students with high ability are more likely to love learning Success in school makes children love learning Praise, especially intelligence-praise, leads to a love of learning Confidence in one’s intelligence is the key to a love of learning Fixed Mindsets can bring about long-term consequences e.g. Over-generalising from one experience Exaggerating failures relative to successes Categorising yourself in unflattering ways Setting self-worth contingencies Losing faith in your ability to perform tasks Underestimating the efficacy of effort Develop ‘stuckness routines’ Reward actions not traits Redefine ‘genius’ Place effort before talent Criticism can be positive Cultivate ‘grit’ Acknowledge imperfections View a challenge as an opportunity Stop seeking approval from others Try different tactics Ask for feedback Use the word ‘YET’ Learn from other peoples mistakes GROWTH MINDSET The one who falls and gets up is so much stronger than the one who never fell
