Capstone AP: Seminar Information Night June 15, 2017

2 What is AP Capstone?  Seminar (year 1): This course aims to equip students with the power to analyze and evaluate information with accuracy and precision in order to craft and communicate evidence-based arguments.

4 Framework

5 Goal of the AP Capstone Course
Students engage in conversations about complex academic and real- world issues.  This class will focus on an interdisciplinary study focusing on themes or topics derived from student interests, concepts or issue from other AP courses, local and/or civic issues, global or international topics.

6 Project-based Learning
Students consider each theme or topic through a variety of lenses and from multiple perspectives, many of which are divergent or competing. Students will use the following lenses for analysis: Cultural and social Artistic and philosophical Political and historical Environmental  Economic Scientific Ethical

7 Team Project Team Project and Presentation (3-5 students) – 20% of AP Score Individual Research Report Team Multimedia Presentation and Defense

8 Essay Presentation Individual Research-Based Essay and Presentation – 35% of AP Score Individual Written Argument Individual Multimedia Presentation Oral Defense

9 AP Exam End-of-Course Exam (2 hours) – 45% of AP Score
Understanding and analyzing an argument (3 short answer questions) Synthesizing information to develop an evidence-based argument (essay)

10 Mrs. Jennifer Egan 20-year veteran teacher
has taught AP Literature (over 15 years) and a variety of English courses has taught AVID for 13 years and a variety of English courses  was also the Capstone/ Senior Project Coordinator for over 10 years when it was a school-wide requirement earned an M.A. in Literature and an M.A. in Education earned a B.A. in Literature and a B.A. Women’s Studies with an emphasis in Political Science. 

11 Are students required to commit to both AP Seminar and AP Research?
No, AP Seminar can be taken as a stand-alone option.

12 Certificates & Diploma
Students who earn scores of 3 or higher on AP Seminar and AP Research will receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate.  Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research as well as earn a 4 on four additional exams will receive an AP Capstone Diploma.

13 When does the class meet?
7th period = flexible collaboration times and office hours.  Students will be given a monthly schedule of collaboration time and office hours. These meetings will take place on A days at lunch and from 8:00-8:45 AM on Wednesday late starts.  AVID students can use tutorial time to collaborate with Capstone classmates.

14 Who should take the class?
Sophomores can begin the program.  It is a flexible AP class with an innovative approach.  It can be an excellent introductory AP class for AVID students, too.
