4 Change in Policy One time 10% increase granted by chair now applies only to mice and rats All other species requires full committee review Required by OLAW in our Animal Welfare Assurance

5 Animal Activity Protocol Form Updated 10/2009 Effective 1/2010 – Investigators are required to submit protocols on updated form The format of the Assurance/Search/Narrative section has been changed to assist investigators in providing the necessary information required by the USDA and OLAW regulations. The Roland Medical Library reference desk (ext. 4-1231) is available to provide additional assistance with protocol searches, if needed.

6 Assurance/Search/Narrative Search should address alternatives to potentially painful and/or distressful procedures Search of 2 databases required Narrative should address 3 Rs: refinement, reduction, replacement

10 Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals 8 th edition Last update was in 1996 Additions to this eighth edition of the Guide include expanded coverage of the ethics of laboratory animal use; components of effective animal care and use Programs; and new guidelines for the housing, environment, and enrichment of terrestrial and aquatic animals, and for veterinary and clinical care. – National Academies Report

11 Environmental Enrichment The AWR (section 3.81) provide detailed information about enrichment plan specifically for nonhuman primates The Guide of the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, 2010 offers a greatly expanded section on Environmental Enrichment dealing with all vertebrate species
