RDA Europe 4.0 – what & why
One of 3 related global projects providing infrastructure support to RDA
Others in USA (NSF-funded) and Australia (through ARDC)
Key goals of European project include:
Establishing and sustaining national nodes
Ensuring RDA has synergy with broader European initiatives – particularly EOSC
Sustaining and increasing European engagement with RDA activity
Core partners Trust-IT, RDA Foundation, SUB-Goettingen, DCC, DRI
National nodes joined as members of project governing board
Began March 2018; ends May 2020 -

Multiple calls to support attendance by early career researchers at RDA plenaries
Current call for attendance at Philadelphia – closes Feb 5th
Notification of results by Feb 28th
Up to 7 grants, maximum value €1750
Studying, or in first 5 years post-doctorate work
Successful candidates required to:
Produce a poster
Attend a designated working/interest group, take notes, provide report
Write public report for use by RDA

Like early careers, support attendance by experts at RDA plenaries
Current call for attendance at Philadelphia – closes Feb 5th
Notification of results by Feb 28th
Up to 5 grants, maximum value €1800
Mid-career or senior experts; focus on adoption of outputs. Group co- chairs and active contributors favoured
Successful candidates required to:
Produce a report on their work & that of their group
Support mentorship programme aimed at ECRs

6 grants, €7000 max, for time as well as expenses
Ambassadors are domain experts & skilled communicators
Disseminate information to and from their communities
Expected to produce a workplan as part of the application

Adoption & Implementation “Solving the problem must include adopters in the process, to ensure that real problems are addressed. Open problem solving is the key.”
RDA Recommendations and Outputs take the form of technical specifications, code, policies or practices, harmonized standards or reference models. In the widest sense these aim for:
Greater data sharing, exchange, interoperability, usability and re-usability;
Greater discoverability of research data sets;
Better management, stewardship, and preservation of research data;
New data standards or harmonization of existing standards.

Calls - adoption
Only one call, currently open – closes March 4th
Up to 8 grants, maximum value €15,000
Work for up to 12 months on adopting an RDA output – preference given to those recognised as ICT technical specifications
Practical use case, description of benefits, and guidance to other potential adopters sought
Co-funding by proposers expected and must be shown
Must present on results and provide written case study

Calls - evaluators
We have a permanent call for evaluators for all the calls (including new nodes)
Time compensated at €400/day against agreed schedule
Part of a pool – project tells you when you are needed
Criteria include expertise, engagement in RDA group(s) and events, evaluation experience (last only desirable)
Need to sign agreements re confidentiality & conflict of interest, and produce evaluations against designated criteria and in specific timescale
