3 What is a rant? Popularized by Canadian comedian, Rick Mercer, a “rant” is the sister to the monologue and the distant cousin of debate; it is an individual self-expression, or more simply put, an opinion. It is something that the “ranter” thinks should be known, and they’re not afraid to tell you about it.

4 What is a rant? A rant is usually done with wit and humour, at the same time expressing a position, a stance, or an issue that you think is important. The viewers should be entertained, but at the same time are left with a lasting impression about the topic.

9 What is the difference between a rant and a speech, or monologue?
Purpose: to inform, to get something off your chest, to display a weakness in something, to vent about an issue Tone: aggravated, passionate, annoyed, fed up, committed, etc. Topic: personal, something the ranter is well informed on, hits close to home

10 What do all rants have in common?
Passion!! A current or relatable topic Clear and concise message Makes points to persuade the audience, or at least convinces them of your opinion They are entertaining, funny or intriguing They aren’t too long! Usually 1-2 minutes in length when spoken They use at least some facts or examples to back up the main claim

How do I get started? Step #1 Pick a topic that you are knowledgeable about, or care a lot about. Think – what “grinds your gears”?

12 How do I get started? Step #2 Think about all the negative aspects of your chosen topic. Why does it bother you so much?

13 How do I get started? Step #3 Write your first draft. Think of this draft much like a journal entry – don’t worry too much about the mechanics of it and just focus on emotion and honesty! Step #4 Edit and refine to a final version, ready to be heard!
