2. Hydrosphere 97% of the Earth’s water is Salt Water
2.55% of the Earth’s water is frozen in Ice Caps and Glaciers
That leaves only 0.45% of fresh water available for all life on Earth

3. Why don’t we run out?
Water is constantly being renewed and reused through the Hydrologic cycle. Or
The Water Cycle.

4. Stage 1 of Water Cycle…
Water can return to the air by evaporation from bodies of water or transpiration from plants.
Evaporation and Transpiration are usually referred to as Evapotranspiration.

5. As the water vapor floats up in the atmosphere it will eventually turn back into water droplets
Water vapor => liquid water is condensation
Condensation in the air forms clouds.

6. As the water drops or ice crystals get too large they fall back to Earth.
Precipitation

7. As the precipitation falls back to Earth it do 1 of the following 4:
Runoff (flood)
Infiltrate (get absorbed into the ground)
Be stored as Ice or Snow
Be stored in reservoirs
(natural and man-made)

8. Runoff
Rain that hits the surface and can not go into the ground will flow over the surface into streams, lakes, etc.

9. Infiltrate
Water that soaks into the soil and becomes part of the ground water system is said to infiltrate.
Infiltration depends on soil type, steepness of slope, and vegetation.

10. Ground Water This water can be: -Pumped to the surface
-Stored in the ground
-Reach the surface through exposed rock called springs

12. Storage as Ice or Snow
Water that precipitates as snow in cold areas will remain frozen until it is warmed.

13. Storage in Reservoirs
Some runoff will be captured in Lakes or reservoirs and can be used on demand.
