3
Freewrite What are your perceptions or understandings of revising?
How do you feel about revising? Is it positive? Negative? Neutral? Other? What conversations have you had in the past, with peers or teachers, about revising? What have been your approaches to revising in the past?
4
Tomlinson What (broadly speaking) metaphors or figurative language does Tomlinson use or reference in her essay? What are other ways you’ve either heard revising described, or have described it yourself? How does this compare to how Lamott has described her process?
5
Tomlinson Refining Ore (p254-255) Casting & Recasting (p255-256)
Sculpting (p256) Painting (p ) Sewing & Tailoring (p ) Tying Things Off (p ) Fixing Things (p259) Cutting (p ) Summarizing the conversation present Making connections to the broader conversation that Tomlinson is having, and the argument(s) she is making Also consider pages As well as her conversation bringing it all together at the end Comparing it to your own relationship to the process
6
Tomlinson In these descriptions, even broad terms (e.g. cutting, p260) can shift meaning when deploying more specific language. Consider what this might mean for identifying your audience, communicating with them, and conveying meaning through language choices
7
Tomlinson “A way of seeing is also a way of not seeing” (p262)
What gets left out? What’s regarded as valuable, important Just because it’s not discussed, doesn’t mean that it’s not done Indicative of different writing processes —> what “counts” as writing to different authors Metaphors carry with them associated assumptions (see: refining ore) —> and those associated assumptions are steeped in personal and cultural experiences
8
Freewrite Reflect: is there a revision analogy as discussed in the reading that reflects your experience best? Is that the approach that works for you? What are other ways that you might think about your writing and revising process?
9
