1 Intentions for success:
We will be successful when we can classify matter by its composition. Sept. 6, 2018 Vocab: Element, Compound, Colloid, Suspension, Solution Warm up: Matter surrounds us everywhere. What kind of properties would we use to classify all this matter? You mix two colorless liquids, the mixture turns green. What type of change occurred? Why? How?

2 Ch. 9 - Classification of Matter
II. Composition of Matter (p.36-44) Matter Flowchart Pure Substances Mixtures

3 Can it be separated by physical means?
A. Matter Flowchart MATTER yes no Can it be separated by physical means? MIXTURE PURE SUBSTANCE Is the composition uniform? no yes Can it be decomposed by chemical means? no yes Homogeneous Mixture (solution) Heterogeneous Mixture Compound Element

4 B. Pure Substances Element matter composed of identical atoms
EX: copper

5 B. Pure Substances Compound
matter composed of 2 or more elements in a fixed ratio properties differ from those of individual elements EX: salt (NaCl)

6 C. Mixtures Variable combination of 2 or more pure substances.
Homogeneous Mixture (Solution) even distribution of components very small particles particles never settle EX: saline solution

7 C. Mixtures Heterogeneous Mixture uneven distribution of components
colloids and suspensions EX: granite

8 C. Mixtures Colloid medium-sized particles
Tyndall effect - particles scatter light (looks cloudy) particles never settle EX: milk

9 C. Mixtures Suspension large particles particles scatter light
particles will settle (needs to be shaken) EX: fresh-squeezed lemonade

10 Review Questions Write down the answers as we discuss.
Why does every sample of a given substance have the same properties? Why is the composition of an element fixed? What is the basis of classifying solutions, suspensions or colloids?

11 Review Questions Write down the answers as we discuss.
Why can the properties of a mixture vary? Describe the composition of a compound?

12 Warm up: What formulas and definitions will you put on your note card?
Intentions for success: We will be successful when we can prepare for the test Sept. 7, 2018 Vocab: Molecule, Compound, Element Warm up: What formulas and definitions will you put on your note card?
