The students and I are having fun getting to know each other and are starting to settle into a new school year. A lot of the students are starting to come out of their shells and beginning to become comfortable with first grade! School is getting more fun each day and I’m already seeing growth in the kids. We’re all going to have a great year. Curriculum Night We had a great turn out for Curriculum Night! I was thrilled that so many of you were able to make it for the evening. We covered a lot of information in very little time. I know that the first grade handbook is large and daunting, but I would encourage each of you to look through it, as it has many useful resources. If you still have questions, please feel free to contact me! Thank you again and I’m looking forward to working with each of you. Alternates for the week:
Class Meeting This week we focused on using kind language, being grateful, and thinking before we speak. Our awesome guidance counselor, Mrs. Tami Noel, also came and presented her first guidance lesson on teasing. Mrs. Noel will teach lessons to each first grade class approximately once a month. Math We started our new math curriculum. The first chapter reviews essential counting skills such as carefully counting with one-to-one correspondence. Although this skill is easy for many students, it provides a vital foundation for the chapters ahead. We have also been practicing using the language “same as,” “more than,” “fewer than,” “greater than,” and “less than.” Word Study We started word study block this week! We have been practicing the short /a/ sound. We’ve manipulated words with this sound and practiced hearing it and using it to spell words. We also added several words to our word wall, please practice these at home. They are: at, a, an, I, Writing The students were introduced to their daily journals. Every student will write an entry of their choice in their monthly journals each morning. Writing is an important part of first grade and the kids are off to a great start!
