1 Elements, Compounds & Mixtures
Chapter 22 Page 129

2 What is all matter made of?
An atom is the smallest part of an element that still has the properties of that element

3 Elements An element is a substance which cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means

4 It is made up of only one kind of atom
Element It is made up of only one kind of atom

5 Compounds A compound is a formed when two or more elements combine together chemically

6 Hydrogen (H) + Oxygen (O)
Examples of Compounds Compounds contain elements The elements combine + lose their original properties Compounds CAN be separated by chemical means The elements combine in fixed ratios A compound is a completely new substance with its own properties Sodium (Na) + Chlorine (Cl) NaCl Hydrogen (H) + Oxygen (O) H2O Carbon (C) + Oxygen (O) CO2

7 Mixtures A mixture consists of two or more different substances mingled together but not chemically combined

8 Examples of Mixtures Properties of Mixtures:
chicken noodle soup salad pizza – yes, that would be Yoda… Properties of Mixtures: Each substance in a mixture keeps its identity You can physically separate them They also contain elements, compounds, or both And they can be formed using any ratio of components

9 Differences between Mixtures and Compounds
Consist of a single substance The elements in a compound is always in a fixed proportion The properties are very different to those of the elements used Very difficult to separate Consist of two or more substances The proportion of each substance in the mixture does not matter The properties are the same as those of the substances used Usually easy to seperate

10 Identify the following with as many terms as apply
