Composition notebook and pen/mechanical pencil 1st period: Put your homework in the bin Warm up: “When Disaster Strikes” Discussion Shifting gears: Non-Fiction stories “Based on actual events” discussion “Titanic,” pg. 390 Movie clips to help visualize what is going on in the story. Irony in Titanic Objective(s): Differentiate between fictional and non-fictional elements of “Titanic” by engaging in class discussion and answering questions at the end of reading. Important Dates: 1/28: Early Release (Film Club meeting) 1/30: Film Club Viewing (4pm-6pm)

2 WARM UP 1/26/2009[5 min] Last week we discussed the definition of a real “hero”—someone brave, willing to sacrifice him/herself for other people, etc. Today, we are reading “Titanic,” a real ship that sunk and killed thousands of people back in the early 1900’s. Imagine that you are on board the “Titanic” as it is sinking—what are your thoughts/feelings. Would you worry about saving others, or saving yourself? Explain your answer. Timer

NO NOTES Shifting Gears: Non-Fiction Today, we read “Titanic,” which is a non-fiction story. While reading, I’ll play clips from Titanic the movie (1997).
